New APISWEA members program and services: Job Search Personal Statement Review program
we would like to introduce a Job Search Personal Statement Review program since 2019. The purpose of this review program is to provide additional support for API doctoral student members who will be on the job market in this fall. To join this program, first, become an API member(click how to join) and then connect with Anao at [email protected] if you are interested to participate in this review program. Also, please submit your Personal Statement to Anao by June 15, 2020. Personal Statement Submission Guidelines A personal statement (or cover letter) is arguably the single most important document of your job application package. A personal statement outlines an applicant’s research trajectory (research focus, experience and future direction as supported by publications, grants, etc.), teaching experience and interests, and other qualifications and credentials so that the search committee can have a comprehensive evaluation of “who you are” reading this no more than 2-page document. After talking with many previous successful job applicants and professors who have been on the search committee, a good personal statement is the document that will get you an initial interview (either via skype or at CSWE). Given the importance of your personal statement, the API mentoring group provides support to doctoral students who will be on the job market this coming September by having your personal statement reviewed by experts in the field. For your personal statement to be reviewed by an external expert, please adhere to the following instructions: 1. Please submit an almost final version of your personal statement to be reviewed We try to have the best experts in the field to review your personal statement. This also means that they are all renowned scholars with very busy time schedule. Therefore, to maximize the use of their time, it is important for you to submit an almost final version of your personal statement to be reviewed. 2. Please submit a generic version of your personal statement to be reviewed It is widely known that one should tailor his/her personal statement to different schools, especially the job posts are very different between schools. However, the general structure, flow and presentation of yourself should stay the same. We suggest submitting a generic version of your personal statement to be reviewed so that you can later tailor this version to individual schools. 3. Please submit your personal statement early enough (deadline June 15th, 11:59PM) It is essential to have all your job application material ready as soon as you can. It is even more important for you to do so for it to be reviewed by an external expert. First, given the trend over the past 3 years, social work schools are making job search announcement much earlier. In extreme cases, some schools made their job announcement during the first week of September and made campus visit offer before CSWE. Therefore, it is essential for you to have all your documents ready. Second, the sooner we receive your document, the earlier we can send it to an external expert reviewer and allow him/her a longer period reviewing your personal statement. We expect that you will have a more thorough review when the reviewer has more time to do so. 4. Please limit your personal statement to 2 pages (ideally, 1.5 pages) Many schools have a 2-page limit to personal statement. Even for schools don’t have a limit for your personal statement, you don’t want your statement to be too long so that it becomes cumbersome for the search committee member(s). 5. Submit a reviewer matching sheet along with your personal statement (download the "reviewer matching sheet" ) We use the conference Clusters and Topics of the Society for Social Work and Research to match your substantive research area with our external reviewer so that an external expert “in your field” can provide feedback to your personal statement. |
